The second biggest festival of Nepal, Tihar, also known by many names such as Deepawali or more often known by the name 'Festival of lights' was celebrated on 29 October 2011 in Blockhouse Bay Primary School at Blockhouse Bay, with lots of enthusiasm.
The program started with Laxmi Puja followed by a welcome speech by the President, Mrs Shanta Bhattu and then followed by speech from a senior member of the Society, Mr Baikuntha Aryal on Tihar which highlighted its meaning and importance. The we had wonderful cultural performances involving song and dances by Sana Bhattarai, Rizma Pradhan, Smriti Bhandari, Pankaj Shrestha and the ladies group of Sajana Thapa, Bina Karmacharya, Meena Adhikari, Sabita Bhandari, Mandira Niraula, Neera Pant, Bimala Pokhrel, Ramita Pradhan and Bina. There was lovely songs on Bhailo and Deusi also. From Bhailo and Deusi, we have been able to collect Tihar donation of NZ $ 556.50 on the spot and $151.00 later. This is a very good support and help to the Society.
On the occasion of Happy Deepawali, the President also released NZNS Publication 2011 in the Programme. For the first time, Certificates of Special Achievement were given to Salina Dhungel and Anubhav Thapa on his absent. A speech of thanks was given by Executive Member, Mr Uttam Pradhan and then floor was open for dance to everybody till the closure.
The Programme was organized and co-ordinated by the Tihar Organizing Committee comprising of Ms Meena Adhikari and Ms Sajana Thapa.

Dashain, the biggest and the most anticipated festival of Nepal, was celebrated with lots of enthusiasm and great joy on the presence of honourable and special guests - Patron of NZNS, Lady June Hillary; Patron of NRNA NZ, Sir Ray Avery; MP, Hon. David Cunliffe; List MPs Ms Jackie Blue and Dr. Rajen Prasad; President of AREC, Mr Cecil Lochan; Ethnic Communities Ambassador/ Leprosy Mission New Zealand, Mr Mike Sheppard and members of Nepali Community from Te-Puke. About 215 Nepalese including International students living and studying in Auckland attended the programme.
After Durga Bhavani Puja, the program started with welcome speech by the President, Mrs Shanta Bhattu ,followed by the Mayors speech reading done by Joint-Secretary, Ms Meena Adhikari. After this NZNS member, Mr Indra Pokhrel gave a speech on Dashain and highlighted its meaning and importance Before dinner we had wonderful cultural performances involving song and dances in Nepali, Newari, English and Hindi songs from our talented girls and boys. Sport winners, cultural performers and volunteers were given trophies and certificates by President of NZNS. This time we gave shields to winners who have been winning the first prize consecutively for 3 years. A speech of thanks was given by Secretary, Mrs Leena Gautam, and then floor was open for dance to everybody till the closure.
Programme was organized by NZNS, and co-ordinated by Dashain Organizing Committee comprising of Mrs Leena Gautam and Mr Uttam Pradhan with the help of other executive and general members. MCs were Mr Santosh Acharya and Mr Rahul Bhattarai.

The colourful festival of Teej was celebrated on 3 September 2011 with great joy and celebration at Mt Roskill War Memorial Hall in Auckland. This was the second time that NZ Nepal Society has organised Teej. The program started with welcome speech by President Mrs Shanta Bhattu welcoming all the members, friends and family of the Society highlighting briefly on Teej festival. Patron of NZ Nepal Society, Lady June Hillary was also present at the programme. Vice-President of NZNS, Mrs Jagamaya Shrestha Ranjit was the master of ceremony for the program.
Before dinner, among the activities in the night we had a Teej dance performance on the song "Teej ko rahara ayo bari lai" by Ranjita Bhattu and Arya Shrestha. Also, Prastha Rai performed a dance on the song "Chiya barima"
Mrs Sabina Ranjitkar and Mrs Achala Adhikary of Teej Organizing Committee then gave you a thank you speech.
After dinner, the floor was then opened for dance and it was great to see so many women and men, teenagers and children enjoying themselves in their colourful sarees and dresses. The program was concluded at 10pm.

to introduce the new executive committee to Lady June.".

The "Hand
over" ceremony was held at 1pm at the Society office at Ferndale
House 830 New North Road. The programme started with the outgoing secretary
Mr Laxman Paudel initiating the meeting. The outgoing president Mr. Mahendra Giri
then welcomed and congratulated the new executive committee.
He wished them success in achieving goals to strengthen Nepali Society.
Mr Mahendra Giri then handed over keys to newly elected President Mrs Shanta Bhattu.
The outgoing Treasurer Mr Dipendra KC then presential a financial report,
summarising the societies financial situation and handed over financial document of the last term
to Newly elected Treasurer Mrs Achala Adhikary. This was followed by a brief interaction
between the outgoing committe, the newly elected committee and the general members
of the society present at the occassion.

An annual
general meeting was held at the Wadcross Social Room, Henderson,
Auckland on Saturday 19 June 2010. The programme started with a welcome
speech by the President, Mahendra Giri, and was followed by a report of
activities by Joint Secretory Shantwona Bhattu. The Treasurer, Dipendra
K.C., then presented the Financial Statement of the year 2009/10. Member
Shaurya Bhattarai then reported on the sporting activities that the
society organised for the last year. The President presented a vote of
thanks to the society members, and fellow executive members. At the end
of the programme there was a general Q and A and discussion session.
Sunday 11th April 2010 ,

The program
started with welcome speech by the president, high lights of the day by
the vice president, and followed by the cultural program. A beautiful
dance was presented by Miss Ijma Pradhan, group song led by Indra
Pokharel and later a song of Naran Gopal was sang by Ajit Thapa. A poem
with title "Bhauntariyako Yatri" was presented by Ram Raj Oli. Then
Rajkumari, Jocilyn, together with Mrs Bimala Phokharel and another
friend sang a Nepali song. The special guests were presented with small
gifts, a token of New Zealand. Thereafter Mr Pradhananga and Mr Sharma
spoke a few words to high light New Year expressing an optimistic view
about Nepal. Then coupons for BINGO game was on sale while all lined up
for dinner. The pot-luck dinner was excellent in every way, taste,
texture and variety. There was plenty to feed an army. A bunch of ladies
put a very tiring and meticulous work to get the food stuff ready for
the table. While waiting for food all had good time to meet and greet,
talk to the special guests and take photos. After the dinner the special
guests had to leave for the airport. Then our BINGO game started. Dr
Amir Shrestha and Indra Pokharel took the responsibility of running the
game on their shoulders with the help of Preety and Master Ranjitkar. It
was interesting and enjoyable as has always been. Among others Ajit
bagged the FULL HOUSE prize of FOUR CRORES ($40.000000). The society
also was benefited by the game nine crores (90.000000). More energetic,
juniors and seniors alike, came to the dancing floor with modern Nepali
songs. It was difficult to hold ourselves back from not going to dancing
floor. Spectators also enjoyed watching and clapping. All these merry
making would have continued for long but we had to cut short to clean up
and leave the premises.

Nepal Society organised an event celebrating Tihar 2009 with Laxmi Puja,
Bhailo and Deusi with friends and families. Tihar Special Food
preparation was excellent and tasty. Members had a great relaxing moment
during meeting and greeting and later while eating food. The Celebration
was fulfilled by excellent dance performance by Nigya Pokhrel and
Swarnima Subedi. It was all prepared in a short notice which is very
appreciable.
The Secretary started the Programme by inviting the president for a
short introduction of the programme. Then followed by Laxmi Puja by all
present. There was quite a good crowd attending the function.

Nepal Society organised an event celebrating Dashain 2009. The event was
organised at the Fickling Center, Three Kings. A special cultural
program was organised for the celebration. A large number of families
and friends from Tipuke were also attending the function.

Nepal Society Inc organized the inter community sport event
'Sport 2009'. Sports 2009 included Chess ChampionshipTable Tennis Championship
Badminton Championship and a Friendly Soccer
Match
All events involved more than 100 participants. Special thanks goes to
the friends from Tipuke who came all the way from Tipuke for the games.
Participants also volunteered to involve in organizing and running the events and participation of parents & family
members also helped in the great success of the tournament.
NZNS would like
to thank all the participants and congratulate winners of all
tournaments. All the prize winners will be awarded with the prizes for
this tournament in next society's program.
